Repair or Replace a Pinball Circuit Board: Which Should You Choose for Your Machine?

🛠️ Your Pinball Machine Won't Boot? Repair or Replace the Circuit Board?

Is your pinball machine refusing to start, resetting on its own, or behaving strangely?
The problem usually comes from the main circuit board: CPU, driver, power supply or sound board.

At Pinballs.Store, we specialise in new replacement boards for Gottlieb and Williams pinball machines. We get this question every single day: should I have my original board repaired, or replace it with a new one?

Here is a complete, honest and practical comparison to help you choose the most reliable, affordable and long-lasting solution for your machine.

🔧 First, in praise of restoration

Let's start with an admission that may sound odd coming from a company that sells replacement boards.

We think restoration is one of the finest things you can spend your time on. People who spend an entire winter bringing a dead machine back to life are doing something quietly admirable. And the instinct to repair rather than throw away strikes us as deeply right — and not only where pinball machines are concerned.

There is a particular kind of satisfaction available to anyone who has chased a fault through a forty-year-old circuit and found it. It feels like nothing else. You didn't buy it. You reasoned your way through a physical object designed by people who are now retired or gone, and you understood it well enough to make it work again.

Restoration is also worthwhile on several counts:

  • It keeps machines out of the skip. Every machine repaired is a machine that didn't go to the scrapyard. In the age of the disposable, fixing a 1985 pinball machine is a small act of resistance.
  • It preserves knowledge. Whoever learns to diagnose a System 80 becomes the person who can teach the next one. That chain is the reason this hobby survives.
  • It preserves authenticity. For a collector keeping a machine in original condition, the original boards are part of what the machine is. We understand that completely.
  • It's a project. Some people don't want a working pinball machine: they want the process of making it work. That's not a lesser motivation — it may well be the purest one.

If that describes you, carry on. Genuinely. This article isn't trying to talk you out of it, and we'll happily sell you components for a repair.

Faulty circuit board in a Gottlieb System 80 pinball machine

Option 1: Have the original circuit board repaired

Repairing a corroded CPU board for a vintage Gottlieb pinball machine

✅ Advantages

  • Lower up-front price: between €40 and €90 for a straightforward repair.
  • Authenticity preserved: often the collector's preference.
  • Environmentally sound: it keeps electronic waste down.
  • Experience and learning: you come out of it knowing how to do the job.

❌ Drawbacks

  • 40-year-old components = uncertain reliability.
  • Scarce parts: some chips are simply unobtainable (e.g. Gottlieb System 1).
  • Long lead times: up to 3 weeks, depending on which repairers are available.
  • Little or no warranty: if it fails again, you start over.

🧠 Why we still come down on the side of a new board

Our reasoning rests on three observations drawn from daily practice.

1. You're usually not repairing a fault, but the first of a series

This is the argument that convinced us, and the one that lands worst at the start of a restoration.

When a forty-year-old board fails, the guilty component is rarely the only tired one: it's simply the one that gave out first. Every electrolytic capacitor on that board has spent four decades drying out. Every solder joint has been through thousands of thermal cycles. The fault you have just found is a sample, not an exception.

The repair works, the machine runs, and four months later something else lets go. That second fault costs another diagnosis, another wait, another invoice. We have watched this cycle repeat three or four times on the same machine.

2. Battery corrosion is a slow-motion disaster

Gottlieb System 80 and 80B MPUs use a battery-backed 5101 RAM. That battery eventually leaks. And when it does, the electrolyte creeps along the traces and under the components, and it doesn't stop.

A badly corroded board can be saved — we have seen superb work done on boards in dreadful condition. But "can be saved" and "will be reliable afterwards" are two different claims. Corrosion hides beneath the ICs and inside the vias, where you can neither see everything nor clean everything.

Our boards are battery-free by design. The failure mode is eliminated, not managed.

3. Downtime is the invisible cost

A repair means two to three weeks, often more depending on repairer availability. Our boards ship in 24–48 hours.

Nobody counts the weeks the machine spends switched off. And yet, if a pinball machine exists to be played on a Friday night with friends, those are exactly the weeks that matter.

Option 2: Buy a new board from Pinballs.Store

We offer new boards compatible with:

  • Williams System 3, 4, 6, 6A, 7
  • Gottlieb System 80, 80A and 80B

Based on the open source LISY.dev projects, our boards are designed as perfect drop-in replacements for the originals, while delivering modern performance and reliability.

✅ Advantages

  • Maximum reliability: modern components, built-in protection, longer service life.
  • Easy installation: Plug & Play, no soldering, instructions included.
  • Battery-free: no corrosion to dread ten years from now.
  • Bonus features: Freeplay, diagnostics via LEDs or a web interface.
  • Human customer support: responsive and genuinely enthusiastic.
  • 15-day money-back guarantee + 6 months of cover against manufacturing defects.
  • Our boards use socketed fusible components, which protect the board if you miswire a connector. That way you won't have to rebuild everything after one bad move.

❌ Drawbacks

  • Higher up-front cost: between €99 and €349, depending on the board.
  • Less "authentic": some purists prefer the original boards.
  • Less instructive: you won't live through the diagnosis from end to end.

Note that two rows of this table clearly favour repair. We left them in, because they are true.

🤝 A third way, often the best one

The two options are not mutually exclusive. Here is what we actually recommend to most people:

Fit a new board so the machine plays again. Keep the original. Restore it at your own pace.

The machine comes back to life this week. The original board stays on the bench as a project with no deadline and no pressure — which, incidentally, is when restoration is most enjoyable. If you finish it, you have a spare board and an authentic one. If you don't, you've lost nothing.

Either way: keep your original boards. Don't throw them out.

🛒 In short

If you love the process — restore. Take your time, ask for help, and enjoy it. This hobby needs you more than it needs one more customer.

If you want the machine running reliably, and restoration is a means rather than an end — fit a new board, keep the original, and go and play.

Neither answer is wrong. We simply think the second one is right more often than people expect, and we'd rather say so plainly than pretend to be neutral.
