What Makes the System 80B Different (vs. 80 / 80A)
The 80B is serviced much like a System 80 (aging CPU and driver boards, grounds, connectors, leaking battery), but with 4 key differences to know about:
- The power supply is separate and stays in place. On the 80/80A, an all-in-one board can replace the power supply; on the 80B, you keep the original power supply (different architecture). See below: a power supply kit is available.
- Audio is handled differently. The 80B machines have their own sound boards. An all-in-one CPU board only includes audio for a handful of titles; for the rest, you keep (or replace) the original sound board.
- Larger displays (alphanumeric), with specific wiring and positioning.
- On some models, expect a minor mechanical adjustment: the display ribbon cable may be a bit short (a small extension is needed) and the backbox neon tube may need to be raised or repositioned to make room for the board (common cases: Diamond Lady, TX Sector, Robo War, Excalibur, Bad Girls, Big House, Hot Shots, Bone Busters).
