GottFA80_Plus V2 Full Integrated Sound Board: Compatibility, Settings, and Audio Testing

GottFA80_Plus V2 Full Integrated Sound Board: Compatibility, Settings, and Audio Testing (Gottlieb System 80 / 80A / 80B)

Gottlieb System 80, System 80A, and System 80B pinball machines are loved for their gameplay, but their original Gottlieb sound boards often become unreliable after 40 years — random failures, missing speech, unbalanced volume, and so on. The GottFA80_Plus V2 Full integrates a modern sound board directly onto a single board, while keeping the authenticity of the original sounds intact.

GottFA80_Plus V2 Full: complete board with CPU, driver, power supply, and integrated sound for Gottlieb System 80, 80A, and 80B
GottFA80_Plus V2 Full: a complete board (CPU + driver + power supply + integrated sound).

A Complete Plug-and-Play Board (CPU + Driver + Power Supply + Sound)

With the GottFA80_Plus V2 Full, you replace most of the original electronics with a reliable, modern, and 100% plug-and-play solution, without modifying your machine.

  • Integrated CPU: system compatibility preserved
  • Integrated sound board: sounds and speech identical to the original
  • Integrated driver: original behavior preserved
  • Integrated power supply: a clean, stable solution

Authenticity Preserved: ROMs, Audio Modes, and DIP Settings

The board replaces the CPU and the original sound board while strictly preserving:

  • the game's original ROMs
  • the original sound and speech modes (including speech)
  • the DIP settings specific to each machine

Whether your machine uses an MA55, MA216 (speech), MA309, or MA490 sound board, the audio behavior is preserved exactly.

Audio Test: Settings and Verification Procedure

Before testing, configure the audio options correctly to faithfully reproduce the original board's behavior.

Step 1 — Configuring the DIP Switches (SB Opt / S3)

The integrated sound board's options are set via the SB Opt DIP switch block.
⚠️ Important: these settings depend on the game. For exact values, consult the corresponding Gottlieb manual.

SB Opt / S3 DIP switches: audio settings per the Gottlieb manual.

DIP Correspondence (General Rule)

  • MA55 and MA490 sound boards: DIPs 1 and 2 of the SB Opt block correspond to DIPs 1 and 2 on the original sound board
  • MA216 and MA309 sound boards: DIPs 1 through 4 of the SB Opt block correspond to DIPs 3 through 6 on the original sound board

Built-In Audio Test ("Test" Button)

Pressing the board's "Test" button:

  • on a speech-capable sound board, the Mini Player plays: "Tilt tilt tilt"
  • on other sound boards, it plays: "oohhhhh"

This test lets you immediately confirm:

  • the audio section is working correctly
  • the sound signal and speech are present

Audio Settings and Sound Section Components

GottFA80_Plus V2 Full sound section: voice and sound volume potentiometers, TDA7267 amplifier, Mini Player module
Sound section: volume controls, amplifier, and Mini Player.

Adjusting Volume (Sound vs. Speech)

  • 🟥 Potentiometer — Speech volume: adjust the level of speech if it's too quiet.
  • 🟩 Potentiometer — Sound volume: adjust the level of non-speech sounds (effects, music).

⚠️ Note: overall volume is mostly controlled by the potentiometer located inside the coin door. Only use the board-level controls to balance the level between sound effects and speech.

🟨 Audio Amplifier (TDA7267)

If you have no sound at all even though the sound section's fuse is intact, the amplifier may be at fault.
It can be replaced with a TDA7267 (an equivalent part), widely available for just a few dollars.

⬜ Mini Player (Speech)

The Mini Player holds the speech audio files. It lights up blue when a speech clip plays, giving you a quick way to confirm it's working during testing.

Connecting the Sound Extension (A1J6)

To connect the sound extension to your machine, you'll need:

  • the extension cable
  • the A1J6 connector

Everything connects exactly as it did originally at A1J6.

A1J6 connector: orientation and connection direction arrow
Important: the orientation arrow must point toward the matching side.

⚠️ Important:

  • make sure the cable color matches on both ends (main board side and extension side)
  • make sure the connector arrow (circled in red) points toward the same-colored cable on both sides

FAQ — GottFA80_Plus V2 Full Integrated Sound Board

Does this board keep the original sounds and speech?
Yes. The GottFA80_Plus V2 Full follows the original ROMs and reproduces the game's audio modes (sound and speech) with behavior identical to the MA55, MA216, MA309, and MA490 boards.

Where do I set the audio DIP switches?
Settings are made via the SB Opt block (also labeled S3 on some versions). Exact values depend on the game — check the corresponding Gottlieb manual.

What if I have no sound at all?
First check the sound section's fuse. If it's fine, the amplifier (TDA7267) could be the cause. It's replaceable with an equivalent part.
