Don't Touch the Plunger — Adding New Technology to a Game We Already Love

There's a question underneath every modernisation decision in this hobby, and it's worth stating plainly:

What is it, exactly, that we love about these machines?

Answer that honestly and most upgrade debates settle themselves. Because the things people genuinely love turn out to be remarkably specific — and almost none of them are the forty-year-old capacitors.

The things that must never change

The plunger

Start here, because it's the purest example.

A plunger is a spring and a rod. It is mechanically trivial. It could be replaced with a button — several manufacturers have done exactly that — and the machine would function identically.

And it would be worse. Not slightly worse. Fundamentally worse.

Because the plunger is where you and the machine physically negotiate. You feel the spring compress. You judge it by hand. You develop, over hundreds of plays, a feel for exactly how far back to pull for a skill shot on your machine — which is not the same distance as on someone else's machine, because these are physical objects with individual characters.

That relationship cannot be improved by technology. It can only be removed by it. So: don't touch the plunger.

The physicality of the whole thing

The plunger is the clearest case, but the principle extends. The weight of a steel ball. The noise a pop bumper makes. The way a nudge shifts the ball and the way a nudge too hard tilts you out — that fine judgement in your hips and hands. The specific, irreplaceable satisfaction of a ramp shot that goes exactly where you intended.

All of it is physical. All of it is analogue. All of it is why a pinball machine is not a video game with a bigger cabinet, and why nobody who loves pinball has ever been fully satisfied by a simulation of it.

The community around the machine

The third thing, and the one most easily overlooked in technical discussions.

Pinball is social in a way that has largely vanished from gaming. People gather around a machine. They watch each other play. They give advice, argue about rules, take turns, hold beers. Shows like Pinball Expo exist because the hobby is fundamentally about being in a room with other people and a machine that makes noise.

Restoration is social too — the forum thread where someone talks you through a fault at midnight, the collector two towns over who has the part you need, the person who taught you what a cold solder joint looks like. That network is the reason these machines still exist at all.

No technology should route around that. If a tool makes it unnecessary to ever speak to another human about pinball, that tool has taken something from you and called it convenience.

So what is fair game?

Here's our working test, and it's simple:

Does this change how the game plays, or does it change how the game survives?

Everything on the survival side is fair game. Everything on the gameplay side deserves enormous suspicion.

Things that help a machine survive

  • Modern replacement boards. A GottFA80_Plus runs the identical original ROMs. The game plays exactly as it did in 1985 — it simply plays reliably, and without a battery that will eventually leak and destroy the board it's mounted on.
  • LED lighting. Our Neon LED Kit replaces a failing fluorescent tube, ballast and starter. The backglass is lit — as it always was — without the flicker, the heat, or the hum. Nothing about the game changes.
  • Better diagnostics. A Lisy80 tells you what's wrong faster. Time you don't spend troubleshooting is time you spend playing.
  • Ground modifications. Fixing a documented 1980s design flaw is not a modification of the game. It's the repair Gottlieb should have made.

Things that change the game

Altered rules. Modified scoring. Anything that inserts itself between your hands and the ball. Anything that plays for you, assists your aim, or "optimises" an outcome that was meant to be earned.

We have no interest in any of it, and we'd rather lose a sale than build it.

Where our own AI work sits

We've hinted elsewhere at a project involving AI-assisted diagnostics, so it's fair to hold it to the same test.

It sits firmly on the survival side. It's aimed at the moment when your machine is not working — the dark hours between "something is wrong" and "I found it." It has nothing to say while you're playing, because while you're playing there is nothing it could add.

The goal is more machines running and fewer machines abandoned. Not different machines.

The old and the new, properly understood

Some people hear "modernising vintage pinball" and picture a screen bolted where the backglass was. We understand the reflex, and we'd object just as loudly.

But there's a version of old-meets-new that's almost invisible, and it's the version we build: the machine looks the same, sounds the same, plays the same, feels the same — and simply doesn't die. The forty-year-old electrolytic capacitor is gone. The forty-year-old experience is untouched.

A restored machine is not a museum piece. It's a working object that someone plays on a Friday night with their friends. Every part of our job is in service of that Friday night.

The plunger stays exactly as it is.
