Common Issues (System 80)
All Gottlieb System 80 pinball machines share a well-known set of weaknesses regardless of the game:
- Leaking NiCad battery: soldered to the MPU board, it corrodes traces and components over time — the #1 cause of dead boards. Remove it immediately.

- Drifting power supply: the 5V and 12V rails sag over time; trim pots and aging capacitors need attention.
- Displays: missing segments or digits (J2/J3 edge connectors are the first thing to check).

- Video I/O board is the weak point: failures most often caused by defective integrated circuits (ICs) on the dedicated video I/O board (GTB-MA265).
- Boot stuck if the MPU cannot communicate with the video board: the MPU does not complete its startup cycle without this communication.
- Screen displayed in German: default behavior when the video board does not receive data from the MPU (via the lamp drivers) — a diagnostic clue.
- Random tilts: often caused by U4 on the I/O board (and switch error #16); bridge rectifiers and nearby orange capacitors can also be the cause.
- Connectors A3-J3 and A23-J2: check that every wire is correctly seated in its proper position (a wire may have been placed back in the wrong location).
- Rare video parts: the GTB-MA265 card cage and the expertise required for the video portion are rare; methodical diagnosis is essential.

- With power off, visual inspection: look for any signs of battery leakage or corrosion on the MPU of your Caveman; remove the NiCad battery if still present.
- Power supply: measure the 5V rail and verify it reaches the MPU (re-solder the voltage regulator or Q1 if voltage drops).
- Grounds: apply ground mods between the boards (CPU, driver, power supply, sound).
- Connectors: re-pin oxidized Molex connectors, especially the MPU-to-driver board connection.
