LED vs. Fluorescent in a Pinball Machine: The Honest Comparison

Should you keep the original fluorescent tube in your pinball machine's backbox, or switch to LED? On nearly every measurable criterion — startup, evenness, heat, lifespan, fragility, bulk — LED wins. The tube keeps just one advantage, but it's a real one: authenticity, which matters for a 100% original restoration or a competition machine. Here's the complete comparison, no punches pulled, with prices checked in July 2026.

⚠️ Safety. The backbox lighting circuit is wired to 115 V AC: a dangerous, potentially lethal voltage. Always unplug the pinball machine from the wall outlet before opening the backbox, and don't rely on the machine's power switch. How a fluorescent tube works

A fluorescent tube isn't a light bulb. It's a glass tube filled with a low-pressure gas and mercury vapor, coated inside with a fluorescent powder. To light it, three parts have to work together:

  • The ballast (a coil, on period wiring): it limits the current once the tube has struck, and supplies the surge needed to strike it.
  • The starter: a small cylinder containing a bimetal contact. It heats up, closes, preheats the filaments at the ends of the tube, then opens abruptly — that break causes the surge that strikes the arc.
  • The tube itself: the electric arc excites the mercury vapor, which emits ultraviolet radiation, and the fluorescent powder converts that UV into visible light.

Hence the typical behavior: you switch on, it flickers once or twice, then settles. When a tube ages or a starter tires, the flicker drags on — and on some pinball machines, that striking cycle is no small thing (more on that below).

How an LED strip works

An LED strip is a flexible printed circuit carrying light-emitting diodes, powered at low DC voltage by a small power module. No gas, no mercury, no striking: you apply the voltage, the light is there, at full intensity, immediately. There's no starter and no ballast, so two wear parts fewer.

The honest read on this table: as raw parts, fluorescent isn't expensive, and a generic strip is cheaper still. What you pay for with a dedicated kit is the 115 V AC transformer module already sized and wired, the length and color temperature chosen for a System 80B backbox, the lever-action Wago connectors included, and the fact that it goes in in about ten minutes with no soldering or drilling. The honest point: what about originality?

That's the serious objection, and it deserves better than a sales-pitch dodge. A demanding collector can legitimately prefer the original tube, because an “all-original” machine has a documentary and sometimes market value that even the best-executed modification doesn't replace.

Two parts to the answer, without overstating it:

  • The kit is reversible. Nothing is cut, nothing is drilled. You put the tube, ballast and starter in a labeled box, and the day you want to go back, it's a ten-minute job.
  • The LED is invisible. Once the backglass is in place, all you see is the light. No visitor will know what's behind it.

The pitfalls of a badly chosen LED

Not all LEDs are equal, and a bad LED really can spoil a backglass's look. The three classic mistakes:

1. A color temperature that's too cold

This is pitfall number one. A 1980s backglass was printed to be seen under a warm-to-neutral white. Light it at 6,500 K and the yellows turn greenish, skin tones go gray, the whole thing takes on a clinical look that has nothing to do with the original. Aim for a warm-to-neutral white; beyond that, you distort the artwork.

2. “Ghosting”

On some setups, LEDs keep glowing faintly when they should be off, because of residual leakage currents. That's mainly a problem on switched playfield lamps, less so on directly-powered backbox lighting, but it's worth knowing before you “convert everything to LED” in a machine.

3. Bargain-basement strips

The cheapest strips drift: the advertised “warm white” color temperature pulls toward blue after a few hundred hours, the LEDs on the same strip don't age at the same rate, and the adhesive lets go in the heat. In a closed backbox, that's exactly what you don't want.

Where LED clearly wins

  • Reliability: no more starter to replace, no more ballast humming or heating up.

Frequently asked questions

Will LED distort my backglass?

Not if you choose the right color temperature. A warm-to-neutral white reproduces a 1980s backglass's colors faithfully. It's a cold white (6,000 K and up) that causes problems: it greens the yellows and grays the skin tones.

Can I just put an LED tube in place of the fluorescent one?

Technically, LED tubes exist, but they almost always require neutralizing the ballast and starter, and the expected wiring varies from model to model (line and neutral on the same side, or one at each end). And an LED tube is still a tube: same bulk, so no space gain on the machines where that's exactly the problem.

Does it really use less power?

Yes, markedly, at comparable brightness — but let's be honest: on a machine used a few hours a week, the saving on the bill is symbolic. The real benefit is elsewhere: less heat in the backbox and more wear parts gone.

Does switching to LED lower my pinball machine's value?

In the vast majority of cases, no: the modification is invisible and reversible, and a buyer will mainly note that the machine works. For a collector's piece sold as “all-original,” the question is different — keep the original tube, ballast and starter in that case.

Should I remove the ballast and starter?

With an LED kit that has its own power supply, yes: they no longer serve any purpose, they take up space, and the starter is precisely the part implicated in the documented boot problems on the late System 80B games. Store them rather than throwing them away.

Is it dangerous to do this yourself?

The job is simple but it's done on 115 V AC, a dangerous voltage. The absolute rule: unplug the pinball machine from the wall outlet before opening the backbox. If you're not comfortable with mains wiring, get help from someone qualified.
