On a Gottlieb System 80B, the backglass is lit from behind by a fluorescent tube, driven by a ballast and a starter, wired to the machine's 115 V AC line. Forty years on, it's one of the first assemblies to fail: endless flickering to start, buzzing, humming, then nothing. You have three real options — rebuild it exactly as original, switch to LED, or improvise. This guide compares them plainly, then walks through the install step by step.

How the original lighting works

Above the boards, a horizontal fluorescent tube lights the backglass from behind. Three parts work together, and each can fail independently of the other two.

  • The tube — a T8 roughly 45 cm (18 in) long, 15 W, whose fluorescent coating converts ultraviolet into visible light.
  • The ballast — a ferromagnetic choke that supplies the striking surge, then limits the current. It's the heavy part that heats up and hums.
  • The starter — a small plug-in cylinder that preheats the electrodes for a second or two, then opens to strike the arc. Responsible for the flicker and the “click-click” at startup.

Why it ages badly

  • The starter wears out: bimetal contacts stick or erode, hence the endless flicker.
  • The ballast heats up and hums: the core laminations loosen and the insulating varnish ages.
  • The tube blackens at the ends: oxide deposits from the electrodes, and a backglass that's dimmer at the edges.
  • It's fragile glass inside a 130 kg (285 lb) machine that gets moved and laid down.
  • It draws power: 15 W plus ballast losses, constantly.

The detail few people know: the starter can crash the game

This isn't a forum myth. PinWiki documents erratic startups on the late System 80B games — Hot Shots, Bad Girls, Big House, Excalibur: displays frozen on garbage characters or dark, a sound board that won't boot, stuck lamps or coils. The identified source is the backbox fluorescent tube's starter, and the documented fix is to remove it. On these machines, deleting the fluorescent circuit isn't just a convenience: sometimes it's the repair.

Your three options, compared honestly

Option A — rebuild it exactly as original

The purist option, defensible if you're aiming for a strictly original restoration. Three limits to know before you order.

Voltage. A ferromagnetic T8 15 W ballast bought from a European lighting supplier is designed for 230 V. On the 115 V AC line of a US pinball machine, it won't strike properly. You need 110-120 V, so a North American seller.

Availability. At Marco Specialties, the 010-5015-00 ballast is $39.99 marked “Domestic only”: no shipping outside the US, and the FS-2 starter at $1.09 was out of stock (checked July 27, 2026). At Pinball Life, same date: 010-5015-00 ballast $29.95, 50/60 Hz choke version $39.95, FS-2 starter $0.95, backbox tube $6.95. Add shipping and customs.

Time. You're putting back into service a technology with exactly the same flaws it had in 1987. In five years, the starter will start again.

For a general-lighting reference: at La boutique des ampoules, a 15 W 0.44 m T8 tube is €4.67 inc. VAT, an FS22 starter €0.72 inc. VAT and a Vossloh Schwabe 1x30W/2x15W ballast €15.00 inc. VAT (checked July 27, 2026) — but that ballast is meant for 230 V.

Option B — the LED kit built for the machine

Option C — the DIY route with a generic strip

Tempting, and doable if you know what you're doing. The pitfalls, honestly:

  • Voltage. An off-the-shelf strip runs on 12 or 24 V DC; the backbox line is 115 V AC. You need an intermediate power supply that accepts 115 V — many models sold in Europe are rated 220-240 V.
  • Format. Strips are sold by the reel when you need about 40 cm. At La boutique des ampoules, a 24 V 4.8 W/m IP20 strip is €28.50 inc. VAT and a 230 V/12 V DC 20 W transformer €12.50 inc. VAT (checked July 27, 2026): you're already not far from €49, with no guarantee of 115 V compatibility.
  • Mounting. A bare power supply at the bottom of a wooden backbox with exposed 115 V connections is a no. Use connectors made for the job, tightened, with nothing left loose.
  • Color. A white that's too cold distorts the backglass colors: aim instead for a neutral white around 4000 K.

Safety: 115 V AC is nothing to shrug off

This circuit is connected to mains power, not the 6 V or 12 V of the rest of the machine. Accidental contact can kill.

  • Unplug the machine from the wall outlet before any work. Not “switched off at the button”: cord pulled from the wall.
  • Never power it back up with bare conductors exposed.
  • On Gottliebs earlier than System 80A, the cabinet metalwork was not factory-grounded: never use it as a reference.
  • If mains wiring makes you uneasy, have the kit fitted by someone who does it for a living.

Step by step: fitting the LED kit

  1. Unplug the machine from mains and wait a minute.
  2. Open the backbox and lay the backglass flat, painted side up, on a clean surface.
  3. Identify the two tube wires. They come from the transformer panel and reach the ballast. Photograph the wiring before touching anything.
  4. Check one last time that the machine is unplugged.
  5. Remove the tube, starter and ballast. The tube and starter come out with a quarter turn; the ballast is screwed down. Keep the parts if you want the option to reverse the change.
  6. Cut the two 115 V AC wires leaving enough length to work with.
  7. Strip them back 10-12 mm.
  8. Clamp each wire in a lever-action Wago: lever up, wire fully inserted, lever down. Pull gently to check it holds.
  9. Stick down the strip where the tube was, after degreasing the metal, then the module on a flat area, away from the boards and harnesses.
  10. Reassemble, plug in, power on. The light should be immediate and even.

Positioning the strip for even lighting

  • Where the original tube sat, high enough behind the glass: that's where the light spreads best downward.
  • Not pressed against the backglass. You need a few centimeters of setback, or you'll see a bright band and dark corners.
  • Centered across the width. A 5 cm offset shows immediately on a light backglass.
  • Clean backglass and reflector before closing up: forty years of dust absorbs more light than you'd think (see our complete maintenance guide).
  • Test before closing everything. Double-sided tape forgives one repositioning, not three.

What you must never do

  • Work with the machine plugged in. Never on this circuit.
  • Wire a 12 V strip to the fluorescent tube wires. 115 V onto 12 V means a strip destroyed instantly, at best.
  • Twist the wires and wrap them in tape. A mains connection goes in a connector made for it, tightened.
  • Leave the ballast powered “just in case.” It would keep heating and humming for nothing.
  • Drill the backbox. Double-sided tape is enough, and a hole in an original machine shows at resale — a detail that weighs on a pinball machine's valuation.

If you're installing a GottFA80_Plus or a Lisy80

On Diamond Lady, TX-Sector, Robo-War, Excalibur, Bad Girls, Big House, Hot Shots and Bone Busters Inc., the original tube is physically in the way: it blocks fitting a GottFA80_Plus or Lisy80 board and has to be raised or repositioned, redone every time you take it apart. FAQ

Is the kit compatible with every System 80B?

It's designed for Gottlieb System 80B machines from 1985 to 1989 fitted with the stock fluorescent tube: Chicago Cubs' Triple Play, Bounty Hunter, Tag-Team Pinball, Rock, Raven, Hollywood Heat, Rock Encore, Genesis, Gold Wings, Monte Carlo, Spring Break, Arena, Victory, Diamond Lady, TX-Sector, Robo-War, Excalibur, Bad Girls, Big House, Hot Shots and Bone Busters Inc.

Do I need to solder or drill?

No. You cut the two 115 V AC wires, strip them and clamp them into the supplied lever-action Wagos. The strip and module stick down with their adhesive.

Can I go back?

Yes, if you keep the tube, starter and ballast. Since the wires were cut, you'll need to reconnect them — which is why you leave some length.

Is the light brighter?

It's mostly more even and immediate. A new tube lights up strong but takes a second or two to start and darkens at the ends as it ages.

Does the module heat up?

It draws very little and stays lukewarm, where the original ballast heats up noticeably and hums.

Does it change anything about how the game boots?

On the late System 80B games, potentially yes: PinWiki attributes erratic startups to the starter on Hot Shots, Bad Girls, Big House and Excalibur. Removing the starter removes that known cause, without guaranteeing it's the only one.
