Common faults (System 3)

On Williams System 3 to 7, recurring faults come from ageing: leaking NiCad battery on the MPU (corrosion, the No. 1 cause of dead boards), connectors that heat up or burn (power supply, GI) and cracked connector solder joints, resets/reboots on a 5 V drop (power and MPU headers to resolder), rectifier bridge that fails short (Williams put no fuse between transformer and bridge), displays with missing segments or digits (connectors to clean), and 28 V solenoid fuse blowing (stuck slingshot).

Problems specific to Hot Tip (forum feedback)

  • Burning GI connector: a recurring problem on the 3J3 connector that cuts power to the general illumination.
  • GI overvoltage: too high a voltage that heats up then melts the 20 A fuse; clean the fuse holder for a good contact.
  • Bulbs drawing too much: replacing the #44 with #47 or LEDs greatly reduces the current and the heat.
  • Unusual display voltage: Hot Tip supplies 300 V to the displays in addition to the ±100 V — be careful when working on it.
  • NiCad battery on the MPU: corrosion to neutralise absolutely.

FAQ — Hot Tip Williams

My general illumination heats up and the fuse melts.
Check the GI voltage, clean the fuse holder and switch to #47 bulbs or LEDs. It's a power-supply/GI problem, independent of the MPU.

My Hot Tip no longer starts.
Check for battery corrosion on the MPU and the 5 V. The WillFA7 board replaces MPU and Driver and makes start-up reliable, battery-free.

Step-by-step diagnosis

  1. Powered off, visual inspection: spot any trace of battery or corrosion on your Hot Tip's MPU; remove the NiCad battery if still present.
  2. Power supply: check the 5 V and the fuses; resolder the power and MPU headers if the voltage drops or the game resets.
  3. Connectors: re-pin the oxidised Molex connectors, especially the MPU↔Driver link.
  4. Coils: check the solenoid fuses and the switches (stuck slingshot) before powering back on.
  5. Displays: never plug or unplug a display while powered on; test with a known-good display.
