Gottlieb Pinball Machine Crashing? Full Diagnostic of a System 80B (1987 Arena)
Your Gottlieb machine powers on, shows credits... but won't start a game, and crashes the moment you touch the coin door? That's exactly the fault on this 1987 Premier Arena (System 80B). Here's the full diagnostic from its restoration: replacing the boards with a GottFA80_Plus, repairing a shorted coil, a ground mod... and the real cause of the crash, which wasn't what we expected.
The Symptoms: It Powers On but Won't Start a Game
On power-up, the machine turns on and shows credits, but a game won't start: no response to inserting credits, no lamp activity, only the Test button responds. After a power cycle, the credits disappear. And most tellingly: the moment you touch the coin door, the machine crashes (resets). A clue that turns out to be the key to the whole repair.
Opening the Backbox: Board Condition
Opening the backbox reveals: heat marks, a battery still soldered onto the CPU board (leak risk, board living on borrowed time), a clean sound board, and an auxiliary (driver) board that had run slightly hot.

Step 1 — Replacing the Boards with a GottFA80_Plus

Step 2 — Under the Playfield: A Stuck Coil and the Wrong Fuse
Under the playfield, a coil is stuck and needs repair. While we're in there, the fuse that's supposed to be a 2A slow-blow (per the manual) turns out to actually be a 16A fuse — a must-fix. Rule of thumb: always check every fuse in the machine at the same time.
Step 3 — Diagnosing the Coil: Diode or Short Circuit?
We test the coils with the power off and no board installed in the backbox. A healthy coil reads a few ohms (11 Ω here). A suspect coil conducts in both directions. To tell a coil fault from a diode fault, we desolder one leg of the diode (station at roughly 300°C/572°F, a bit of flux helps).

On the multimeter: 0 Ω both ways — the coil is shorted.
Result: the diode reads about 500 Ω — it's fine. The coil, on the other hand, reads 0 Ω both ways → a short circuit. The manual calls for an A-18358: we order a replacement and swap it in (the original had melted internally). Tip: photograph the leg positions and wire colors before desoldering anything.

Step 4 — The System 80B Ground Mod
With the coil replaced, the machine works... but the crashes continue. So we perform the ground mod, a classic fix on System 80B machines: reworking the grounds (33 wires on this machine), installing 4mm terminals (grouped in threes), sanding and thoroughly cleaning the contact surfaces, and then clamping everything firmly against the chassis for a solid ground.

The Twist: It Wasn't a Ground Problem After All
Surprise: even after the ground mod, the crash is still there. So the ground wasn't the problem. The ground mod remains an excellent overall upgrade, but it wasn't the culprit here.
The Real Cause: The Slam Tilt Switch (Coin Door Contact)
Digging further (with help from Steph), the culprit finally turns up: the slam tilt switch, mounted on the coin door. Corroded, overly sensitive, and poorly positioned, it was crashing the CPU (on the A1/J5 connector side) every time the door moved — exactly the symptom noticed at the very start ("it crashes when you touch the door"). The fix: clean and reposition the switch correctly, or disable it on the board.
The takeaway: on a Gottlieb System 80B that crashes when you touch the coin door, check the slam tilt switch first. Reworking the coils, the fuses, and the ground mod are all excellent maintenance, but the trigger can be as simple as a corroded switch.
